This month we removed the some of the ambiguity of forest in historical imagery with the release of a new AI model that detects forest in greyscale imagery.

It doesn't entirely remove the "is this forest... or shadow...hmmmm" while peering at grainy historical imagery, but it's a new piece of information to add to your arsenal when making the call.

CarbonCrop team members Charlie Cottrell-Jury (carbon analyst) and Nick Butcher (co-founder and CEO) mapping forest within the CarbonCrop platform.

New Features

1990 Layer

A new AI model that identifies forest in historical imagery. The new model handles the lower-resolution greyscale imagery, and chooses a layer close to 1990 to evaluate.

It’s now available by default for new sites smaller than 1,000 ha, or on request for other sites.

Our team nickname for this new model is Nirvana - think 90s grunge/rock and the pursuit of the ETS holy grail… a step towards automated eligibility assessments.

We’re releasing the first version of Nirvana into the wild for feedback - we would love to know if it is / is not working well for you.

Updated Carbon Price

The default carbon price in the platform has been updated. The 2025 price has been adjusted from $55 to $45. This will impact any forecasts and reports you have. If you have a custom carbon price forecast, you are not impacted. We review the carbon price defaults in the platform quarterly and adjustments are not always made.

What Else?

Photo points layer now editable: you can set photo points for evidence collection directly in the platform.

Bug Fixes

  • The “AI Processes” banner now shows correctly. Previously, users reported seeing “Unknown processes”.

  • More informative message when trying to upload corrupt shapefiles that can sometimes come from Tupu Ake.

  • Panning the map is now more reliable and works over selected polygons.

  • Hotkey “2” incorrectly selected the line tool.

  • Fixed an issue where task links were not working correctly when viewing emails in Microsoft Outlook.

  • Crop to boundary function used to delete lines and points.

  • Carbon Intelligence more reliably updates for sites with incomplete information

Stay tuned for more updates next month!
