This month was full of visual tools to put the AI land cover data at your fingertips (and your eyes), and practical tools to make planning easier.

CarbonCrop team members Charlie Cottrell-Jury (carbon analyst) and Nick Butcher (co-founder and CEO) mapping forest within the CarbonCrop platform.

Default Polygon Colours

We’ve made it visually easier to assess forest.

When the AI has finished mapping a site, it knows a lot about existing land cover vegetation. Even though this information was there, you couldn’t easily access it. Now you can.

Signposting the AI-assessed type of land cover (native, exotic, scrub) with colour makes it easier to focus on the most important areas. But we’ve kept the charcoal polygon fill which means you can still visually see your ‘to do’ list in the map.

Introducing Scrub

Sometimes the AI knows there is some vegetation there, but it doesn’t clearly meet the definition of forest. It could be native regeneration, but it could also be young exotic species, gorse or matagouri that is planned to clear. We’ve called this Scrub. It’s a strong indicator of potential eligibility if you can confirm that trees species are present.

Scrub is now a pink polygon with a charcoal fill.

New Features

Lines and points

Not everything is a polygon! Custom layers now support drawing lines and points. This is especially useful for mapping fences or survey points.

Buffer tool

Mapping a setback? Extending your planting polygons to their mature canopy extent? The new buffer tool can help you out. This expands or contracts a polygon by the specified amount of metres.

New blank layer

You can now create a new blank layer in our platform without needing to upload a shapefile first.

Filter by report category

The filters in the site level and in Carbon Intelligence now let you filter by report category.

Better site area handling

The area of a site now shows the calculated geographical area rather than the legal area defined by titles. This leads to more accurate calculations. The legal area is still available in the titles list!

Better photo preview

FieldScan photos are no longer greyed out as they are loading, so you can better preview the photo

Bug Fixes

  • ETS Width Calculation for particularly narrow polygons that were close to 1ha in size, our width calculation under-estimated the width compared to ETS’ central area rules. We’ve improved this.

  • Refresh After Adding Layer You no longer need to refresh site after add a new layer.

  • Page Flickering Reported annoying page flicker due to page refresh loop is now fixed.

  • Fix Android FieldScan Links Some users experienced our FieldScan links not opening the app anymore. This was fixed by updating our deep-linking configuration.

Stay tuned for more updates next month!
